My favorite figure skater of all time.

This is my response to question #3 on the webpage that gives you 100 things to blog about when you can't think of anything to blog about

My favorite figure skater of all time? That's easy. Dorothy Hamill. I was in junior high when she was all the rage in the Olympics. Who could forget her cool & cute haircut that all the girls would soon be copying? She had a charming, though almost cringing, shy way of receiving her medals. Then there was the famous Hamill Camel--some big time spin she would do without breaking her neck somehow; but that's for people who know anything about skating to talk about. Me? I was a kid, a guy: I was most interested in her legs. Don't even get me started on those powerful, shapely thighs of hers . . .

OUCH?!

Over a week ago I went to take my frozen pizza out of the oven. Snagged my handy pot holder. Opened up the oven & slowly & carefully pulled the grill toward me.

Looking down, I noticed I was actually holding the metal edge of the grill with my thumb, the pot holder on the underside of the grill edge. Just out of reflex, I hollered & jerked my hand back. Couldn't believe what I had done.

But do you know what? I never felt a thing. It never hurt at all. Turns out, one of the side effects of one of the medications I take is that I might lose feeling in my fingertips. Lucky for me!

This has been over a week ago, & my poor thumb has gone all colors of the rainbow since then. Right now it's a rust color & is peeling around the edges.

Just thought I would share what I thought others might find interesting. Plus, I never had to give up playing Slap Jack . . . but that's another blog . . . My home

The Last Time I Cried

I guess the last time I cried was when my dad died in October, 2010 (since I don't think the cool air from my air conditioner finding my eyes and making me tear up counts).

We, my brother & sisters & I, all thought my mom would go first because she's lived in an Alzheimer's facility for years now & is as frail as can be. His going to see mom probably just wore Dad down. I was taking him every day to sit with her; he would stay from about 10:00AM to 2:00PM, when I would go back & pick him up.

Other things weighed on Dad--his cancer, strokes, old age (85), fretting about Mom. When he got very bad off, it was only a matter of a few days until he was gone. Fortunately, the doctors were able to tell us when his last day would be, so we all got to be by his bedside for hours & hours. He kept his good sense & good sense of humor up to the last, until they boosted his morphine, which left him pretty much sleeping until he passed peacefully away just after midnight.

That's the last time I cried. What about you?

I didn't know what to blog about today. I found a page that gives you 100 blog ideas. This was number one on that list. I knew it would be difficult reliving that sad night in October.

Pic shows Dad being silly in his Italian World War II helmet. This shows his typical expression--a little smile. He was always in a good mood.

Last book read was "Starkweather: The story of a mass murderer." I just LOVE true crime!, especially if it is on a case from long ago. Recommend. Get the copy

Most Useful Book for Students to Read Over a School Break

The most useful book for students to read over a break from school is The Memory Book by Harry Lorrayne & Jerry Lucas.

It makes mastering material much easier by teaching students how to use a handful of fun methods to make students' memories more accessible to them.

An easy read, it's also a fast read in that some of the material--card tricks, etc.--don't apply to students. I broke down the methods and wrote them down to learn them.
